Fixing Your Noisy Garage Door

There are many things that can cause your garage door to become noisy, from worn rollers, to squeaky parts in need of lubrication, and while it’s always sensible to get a professional to thoroughly inspect your door, there may be a few things that you can do yourself to fix the noise, depending upon your level of expertise and proficiency:

What type of noise is your garage door making?

If you can identify the type of noise, then you might get a better idea of what needs to be fixed to stop it. For example, if your door is making a ticking noise, then the rollers or the bearing inside the pulley might be worn, whereas a grating, scraping noise might be indicative of bent coils in the springs of the door.

Give your garage door opening system the once over:

If you know what you’re looking for, you may be able to spot that the nuts on the track system, or the opener chain, need tightening, which can be done with a socket wrench. You may also discover that the opener track needs lubricating, along with the hinges, pivot points, springs and tension bar bearings. This is a reasonably simple task and you may have already been advised to do this twice a year anyway, and if you did so, then there’s a good chance that a lack of lubrication is not the cause of your noisy garage door.

It’s important to remember that you should only ever use a specialized garage door lubricant on the moving parts, and not grease or oil. Your local garage door specialist will be able to tell you exactly which lubricant to use.

Worn rollers are a common cause of unwanted garage door noises, and while they can be replaced, it’s best to get a professional to do this in case of errors which can go on to cause more problems for your door. Aside from the rollers being worn, the bearings may also need to be lubricated, and the hinges may have become worn and need to be replaced. Again, your local garage door specialist can assess the opening system and make any replacements or adjustments as necessary.

Check the balance of your garage door:

Depending upon the type of garage door opener system that your garage door has, you can test its balance by pulling the cord that opens and closes the door manually, raise the door halfway before releasing, and if the system is unbalanced, the door should fall. This can be dangerous though, and it really is best to seek professional help when testing whether the balance of your garage door is the source of the unwanted noise.

Garage doors repair don’t have to cost a fortune, but it’s worth remembering that if you do tackle your noisy garage door without specialist help, you could end up making the problem worse and incurring a larger expense later down the line. Have your local garage door professional, assess the door and advise you on exactly what needs to be done to eliminate the noise, and in many cases, a simple repair or lubrication job may be all that’s needed.
