How Does an HVAC System Work?

HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) are units made up of a lot of tiny moving parts and can seem like a complex system to understand. However, when you look at each of the individual aspects of your HVAC system, it becomes a lot easier to understand and even identify why each aspect is so vital to your home.

The Parts of your HVAC System

The following is a quick breakdown of the anatomy of your HVAC system. Understanding what role each piece of the system plays will help you better understand your HVAC system as a whole, and even help you identify any potential issues or malfunctions later down the road.

Thermostat: One of the most well-known parts of any HVAC system, the thermostat is the interactive element of the system. This piece of equipment is usually installed on an access wall in order to be adjusted manually, or programmed. This helps you keep your home environment at a comfortable and ideal temperature at all times. When the temperature in your home rises or lowers past your set level, the thermostat sets your HVAC system into action circulating the required air to level things back out.

Furnace: The centre of your HVAC unit, the furnace requires the most space out of all of the system’s pieces and is made up of a few different components. This machine is built to heat up air and then have that air distributed throughout your home through ductwork and/or piping.

Evaporator Coil: These are used in the process of cooling the air down when you require the temperature in your home to be lowered.

Condensing Unit: Found on the outside of your home, this unit stores the refrigerant gas that is then pumped through the evaporator coils in order to help cool your home.
